Huug Steketee

huugresizeHuug Steketee was born in 1959 in Zeeland, a province in Southern Holland. He was initially taught by his father, who was a good amateur musician and played the cornet with the local brass band. Huug has happy childhood memories of a musical family home with his father playing the cornet, or listening on a Sunday afternoon to his father's collection of old British brass band vinyl band records. A collection that included some of the Munn and Felton's old 'Bandstand' series of recordings from the late 1950s and early 60s and the legendary players of that time.
At the age of eleven he was enrolled at music college for a half hour weekly lesson on Saturday mornings. By the time he was twelve he was playing with two brass bands. As he gradually improved his father and his friends were all telling him that he was a good player and must begin to take it more seriously. At the age of eighteen, he went to Sweelinck Conservatoire in Amsterdam. His teacher was the famous Klaas Kos, the principal trumpet of the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
In 1982, during his time as a student, he had a successful audition for a position as principal trumpet at the Noordholland Philharmonic Orchestra in Haarlem. In 1986, whilst still having lessons with Klaas Kos, Huug was appointed principal trumpet at the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague, a position he has now held for the last twenty five years.
He is also the Professor of Trumpet at the Royal Conservatoire at The Hague.
Many of Huug's musical heroes are still the brass band players he admired as a young cornet player - James Shepherd, James Scott and Derek Garside. In addition, he now also includes amongst his musical heroes his former private tutor the late international principal trumpet Pierre Thibaud of the Paris Opera. Another trumpet player who Huug has the highest regard for, and considered as one of his closest friends, is Peter Masseurs the former principal trumpet with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam.
Since 2005 Huug has produced two CDs, 'Shining Waters' and 'Portraits in Brass' .On both these recordings he was accompanied by the Hepworth (Cookson Homes) Band.
